Writing The Real Story

“... the job of fiction is to find the truth inside the story’s web of lies, not to commit intellectual dishonesty in the hunt for the buck.” -- Stephen King in On Writing.
This quote finally makes sense to me. It didn’t for a long time. Perhaps I was focused on the "buck" (getting published) and not the quality of my writing. I know now my job isn’t only to find the truth about a story (and its characters), but to use that knowledge to write the real story. Recently, I’ve found that the real story isn’t always the one I started out writing.
