Using Character Conflict to Create Suspense

“Tension and suspense come from characters whose goals conflict with each other.” -- William G. Tapply in The Elements of Mystery Fiction.
Character conflict is something that happens in my writing, but not necessarily because of any conscious effort on my part. I need to be more aware of how my characters’ wants can work against each other to create tension and suspense.
