Get it in Writing

"I can fix bad writing. I can't fix a blank page."
Nora Roberts as quoted on Mike’s Writing Workshop.
I may tend to think too much about stories, instead of getting something on the page. That's not to say letting a story idea germinate for a while isn't an important part of the process. It's like the golfer who takes practice swing after practice swing after practice swing. At some point, he has to hit the ball. I know a story moves faster to completion once the first draft is finished. As yesterday’s quote implied, the importance of the first draft may be simply to get something on the page so the real work can begin.
