Get Personal with a Story

"A writer's job is to imagine everything so personally that the fiction is as vivid as memories." -- John Irving.
This is something I've been working on lately. I like to think of it as writing AS the character instead of writing ABOUT the character.

I wrote a short short over the weekend and spent a lot of time with my eyes closed, imagining the scene and the main character's actions. I didn't get it one hundred percent correct the first time out, but that's what rewrites are for. :)

I agree you really need to get into your characters skin. I have a problem with never feeling like I have gotten my writing right. So first drafts eventually turn into 15th drafts and I am still never completly satisfied.
