Judging Success

“As fantastic as it is to see your name in print, getting published shouldn't be the standard by which you determine your level of personal success or failure. … Plenty of things matter much, much more.” – Ann Edwards Cannon in “7 key principles for writing success.” [The Writer, July 2009]
I read this advice a lot. As a novice writer, it’s difficult to accept. I like to see my stories in print. Who doesn’t? And when a story succeeds, it is personal. However, it's like most things. I'm only a success or failure until the next acceptance or rejection.

Yeah, that's true. This advice should be posted above our computers, to remind us to write well for the sake of writing well. :)
