“Don't sound out sound effects. This is annoying. Simply state,’The gun shot echoed through the chapel,’ instead of ‘Bang! Bang! Bang!’” -- Sandy Tritt in Breathing Life into Dialogue. This is one of my pet peeves. I find it distracting when I read sound effects, especially when the sound is repeated. An example of this happens when an author combines the two sentences in the example above. “The gun shots echoed through the chapel. Bang! Bang! Bang!” It pulls me out of the story every time I see bang, or slam, or whatever. I’ve never paid attention as to whether this occurs in the novels I read. I’m going to start.
