Character or Plot

“Characters are story. And any great plot or subplot is driven by the characters’ wants and desires.” -- Robert Gregory Browne in “The Wonderful World of Subplots.”
Some authors argue that plot is more important in mystery and suspense novels. I can’t imagine reading a story whose main character is someone I don’t like. If I don’t care for the character, why would I care if s/he captures the killer or thwarts an assassination attempt?
