“If you don’t have time to read, you don’t have the time (or the tools) to write. Simple as that. Reading is the creative center of a writer’s life.” -- Stephen Koch in The Modern Library Writer’s Workshop. It's more than just reading that's required, As a writer it’s important to analyze -- even if at a superficial level -- what one reads. What is it about a passage I like or don't like? Why do I find the main character interesting/uninteresting? What is it about the villain that makes me find him intriguing? What about the plot slowed my reading? Some of the story submissions I read make me wonder of the authors reads at all. I know they don't pay attention to what works and what doesn't in a story.
