What is Good Writing?

“After giving this much thought, I’ve come up with this vague, but functional description of good writing: Writing that does not draw attention to itself as writing, but pulls you along smoothly, eager to read more.” -- L.J. Sellers in Can You Define Good Writing?
I finished a book last night that fits this quote. The dual authors have published a number of books. Still there were places where the writing pulled me from the story. I found it annoying, but forced myself to finish. I’d rather read a book where, at the end, I say, “Is that all there is?”, because the writing is so transparent that I feel intruded upon by the words The End.
