“I was never a big fan of plot.” -- Mary Miller in “A case for plot.” [The Writer, December 2009]
I wonder if sometimes knowing the full plot of a story before I begin writing it stunts the story in some way. If I know how I want the story -- or a scene, for that matter -- to end, does that limit what can happen to the characters? There have been stories that got away from me and ended somewhere other than where I planned. In contrast, I’ve been unable to finish some stories because I can’t figure out what needs to happen. And now that I’m at this point of the post, I don’t know how it should end either. I’ll leave that up to the reader.
