The First Chapter

“The first chapter must open with a bang, hit the ground running, take no prisoners, grab 'em by the throat, leave 'em begging for mercy yet praying for more.” -- Elizabeth Guy in Five Ways to Create an Irresistible First Chapter.

It's the beginning of a new year, so I suppose it’s appropriate to find multiple posts from other writers about beginnings. In this article, Ms. Guy’s list includes drop in a conversation, defy your fictional world, reveal a unique motivation, block a bodily function, and set a time limit as important elements in building a first chapter that will captivate readers. Click on the article link above to read more about what the author has to say on each topic.
