Saying More with Less

“The best writers say the most with the fewest words; the worst say the least with the most words.” -- Tarl Roger Kudrick at the Six Questions For... blog.
I refer to the latter as "word diarrhea" in a flash fiction class I’m teaching. The words go on and on and on and..., and nothing happens. I have the opposite problem at times. I don’t provide enough information about a character or a scene for the reader to feel satisfied. It is a delicate balance we writers attempt when we type a bunch of words, hoping a story results.
